Mission & Vision
Tamangshamanism
Our Mission
Our mission is to protect, revive and promote the Tamang Bon Shamanic tradition through careful research, inclusive learning and strong community relationships. We are committed to keeping this heritage alive in its true form while also exploring its meanings through the lens of science, culture, history and human experience. We work with elders, shamans and knowledge holders who carry this wisdom in their voices, bodies and daily lives. At the same time, we bring insights from fields such as anthropology, cosmology, pulse diagnosis, herbal medicine, language and literature and ritual studies to enrich understanding. By encouraging open dialogue between local practitioners and academic partners, we hope to uplift this tradition in ways that are honest, respectful and lasting. Our mission is guided by a deep belief in the value of indigenous wisdom for both the Tamang community and the wider world.
Our Vision
We envision a world where the Tamang Bon Shamanic tradition is cherished as a living source of deep ancestral knowledge. This tradition offers profound understanding of nature, the human mind and the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds. Rooted in the Himalayan highlands and carried through rituals, oral teachings and lived experience, it holds timeless wisdom that speaks to both spiritual depth and ecological harmony. We believe that this heritage should not be seen as a superstition but as a complete way of knowing and being. Our vision is to create meaningful connections between this ancient tradition and present-day fields of thought through respectful learning, cultural exchange and shared exploration. In doing so, we aim to build a future where Tamang Bonpo knowledge is deeply appreciated, actively practiced and passed on with pride and purpose.
Our Goals
Our goals are to record and protect the oral stories, rituals, healing knowledge and cosmological teachings that have been passed down through the Tamang Bon lineage. We aim to support research that brings together traditional shamanic ideas with the fields of environment, medicine, culture and history to create new pathways of understanding. Education is a key part of our work and we will create learning opportunities for students, shamans and researchers within and beyond our community. We seek to support local programs that help maintain rituals, honor sacred places and strengthen the cultural identity of Tamang Bon practitioners. Through books, exhibitions and media, we will introduce this tradition to wider audiences with care and respect. We also aim to build trusted partnerships with institutions and networks that share our values and are willing to work together in a spirit of mutual respect and cultural honesty.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to preserve and renew the indigenous Tamang Bon Shamanic tradition through a thoughtful integration of ancestral knowledge and contemporary academic inquiry. Originating in the spiritual and ecological landscapes of ancient Tibet, this tradition embodies a rich cosmological and philosophical worldview that speaks to humanity’s enduring relationship with nature, consciousness and the unseen dimensions of existence. This platform is not intended to perpetuate superstition but to protect and explore a sophisticated body of knowledge that has been marginalized for generations. We engage with this tradition through interdisciplinary research, drawing from fields such as astronomy, ethnobotany, historical linguistics, cultural anthropology and ecology, to illuminate its empirical, symbolic and spiritual dimensions. In doing so, we also respond to the historical injustices faced by the Tamang people, whose cultural expressions were silenced and systematically excluded from dominant narratives. By reclaiming and sharing this spiritual heritage with intellectual rigor and cultural respect, we seek to contribute to the global recognition of indigenous knowledge systems and to support a deeper understanding of Tamang identity, resilience and wisdom in the modern world.
