Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tamang Bon Shamanism ?
Tamang Bon Shamanism is a spiritual tradition practiced for centuries by the Tamang people of Nepal’s Himalayan region. Rooted in the ancient Bon religion of Tibet—especially from the Zhang Zhung civilization—it has evolved uniquely within Tamang culture through oral teachings, sacred rituals, and deep communion with the natural and spirit worlds.
How did you become a Bombo (Shaman) ?
It is hard to say exactly when the ancestral deities and clan deity first began to take hold of me. I was very young, and I don’t fully remember. But according to my grandfather and father, I began learning around the age of nine, while I was still in Grade 5.
Learning to become a Bombo wasn’t like going to school with pen and paper. In fact, my grandfather always told us, “You must not write down the mantras. You have to learn by listening.” He used to say that writing down the mantras would weaken their spiritual power. That’s why we had to memorize them by heart, through deep listening and repeated practice.
Wherever my grandfather or father went to perform ceremonies and rituals, I would follow behind with a small basket on my back. I carefully observed every action they performed, how they invoked the spirits, made offerings, and recited mantras. I listened to the chants with curiosity and reverence.
Sometimes I was so fascinated by the mantras that I secretly wrote some of them down in a small notebook. I would pretend I needed to go relieve myself and sneak off into the bushes just to write down what I had heard, without letting my elders know. I knew I wasn’t supposed to, but my urge to remember and understand was too strong.
This went on for many years. That is how I learned: through experience, observation, devotion, and a deep spiritual connection that began in childhood and never left me.
How is Tamang Bon different from Tibetan Bon ?
Although both share ancient roots, especially in Zhang Zhung traditions, Tamang Bon has developed as a distinct, clan-based, and ritual-centered system within Tamang society. It remains primarily oral and community-driven, unlike the Tibetan Bon which today is often monastic and text-based.
Tamang Bon integrates local deities, nature-based healing, and ancestral rites, making it deeply woven into everyday life. While both honor Bon cosmology, their expressions have diverged across time and culture.
What services do Tamang Bon Shamans provide?
Tamang Bon Shamans (Bombo) offer a wide range of rituals and healing services, including:
Healing from illness, soul loss, or spirit disturbance
Protection rituals for people, homes, livestock, and travel
Life-cycle ceremonies: birth, marriage, death
House purification and space cleansing
Spirit appeasement and exorcisms
Ancestral offerings
Divination and astrology for guidance and diagnosis
Each service is performed with sacred tools—dhyangro (drum), bell, mirror, and mantras—with the goal of restoring harmony between the individual and the spiritual world.
Can anyone attend Tamang Bon rituals or healing sessions ?
Yes. Our doors are open to all who approach with respect—regardless of background, religion, or ethnicity. Many non-Tamang individuals and families regularly seek healing, blessings, and guidance from our shamans.
Some advanced rituals may require ancestral details or preparatory steps. We encourage a consultation first to determine what ritual is best suited to your situation.

What language is used in rituals and teachings ?

However, teachings and explanations are also available in Nepali, Hindi, and English to support learners from different backgrounds. Key mantras and invocations are always preserved in their original sacred form.
Are these practices still relevant today ?
